My friend {Okanagan | portraits}

My family & I had a lovely little holiday to the sunny south Okanagan last week. On the way to Watermark where we were staying (awesome!! by the way) we spent the night at my friend Michelle's place. Michelle & her family are very special to me as our two first borns were joined at the hip for the first 4 years of their life. So it was great to get together, visit & have the kids reconnect. While we were there, we stole an hour a way from the families to shoot Michelle's headshots for her website & business cards.

If you want to know why Michelle's skin is so fabulous, check out her website! Thank you for such a fun shoot & putting up with some odd locations! You are beautiful :-)

I was lucky enough to have another great session this morning with 2 great kids (and their fantastic Mom :-)). It is really important when you are booking your session to think about the time of day that suits your kids the best. When are they most happy & cooperative? When are they most alert & ready to have some fun? These two were wide awake, fresh and ready to go which made for an easy going session.

And for once it actually felt like summer! So glad the weather co-operated for this family session. We had a great session with a nice walk to One Mile lake and considering I was photographing 2 red heads they were very co-operative! I know Mom's always anxious to see if we captured some good images so here is a very quick sneak peak for you:

We headed out a nice spring evening for a children's portrait session. If you are thinking about having a session and not sure what time of day is best consider the evening. If the kids are old enough & up for it it can be a great time for a session. The air is cooler and the light is beautiful. Unfortunately on this night there were a few uninvited guests (of the buggy kind) but next time, I'll be more prepared! Thank you guys for being such great sports despite the bugs. How do you share your photos?

One of the best things about the digital age is that you can take 100 images & not have to worry about film and developing costs. The worst thing? I can't tell you how often I hear: ugh, my photos are all on my memory stick/hard drive/disc... We take all of these beautiful photographs of our kids, friends, family and often have nothing tangible to share with people.

My solution? I print an album once a year with all of my favorite images. The kids & family love it and I know we will cherish these albums for a long time to come. This year I am putting together a true coffee table book - a hard cover album, thick pages & it lays flat to perfectly show all of your images with no crease. This is one of my favorite pages that I have been working on so far, I love catching small glimpses of who the kids are at different stages! I think this one is a perfect snapshot of Kayleigh, age 5.

How do you share your images? I'd love to know!

Welcome to parenthood {Vancouver newborn photographer}

I often hear "No one told me about..." all the 'fun' of labour & those first crazy few days (weeks...?) home. LOL would you have had a baby if you new it all?

But a few other things likely no one told you or couldn't find the words to describe? How amazing the first coos are, what you'll feel when they reach for your face the first time or how your heart swells with the first "I lub you mummy" (sigh).

To a special friend, welcome to parenthood :-) it's a wonderful journey (just make sure to hang on!). Cole, you are a lucky little man, what a great family you have joined.

Whistler's premier couch photographer {Whistler photographer}

Ugly couch photographer that is. Well, they say only post images of things you love to photograph and want to be known for. You might remember this image posted awhile back. Not my usual stuff but so much fun! So when a friend asked if I would mind photographing her ugly couch for a contest that is running right now I of course jumped at the chance! Oh and it is for WAG (Whistler Animals Galore) so there would be dogs involved (big smile).

If you aren't already familiar with them WAG is Whistler's awesome animal shelter. That is where we found our furry family member 9 years ago and I know countless other dogs & cats in the corridor that have found homes because of them.

The winner of the ugly couch contest run by the Whistler Question & Dream Merchants of Whistler will win a new couch, and these folks & furry folks sure are deserving of a new couch!

The whole group at WAG was great to work with, thank you for thinking of me, it was my pleasure to be able to do this for you.

What a fantastic Easter! We weren't sure when we saw light fluffy snow flakes falling outside the window this morning but luckily it turned into a beautiful spring day. Our Easter egg hunt went off without a hitch and many treats were consumed :-)

Well...almost...the trails are dry and it's great to get out onto them & explore again. One of my friends was out exploring one of the trails in Function and found a couch...sweet...grab the camera :-)

Victory! {Whistler photographer}

Tonight was the last of the victory ceremonies for the Paralympics that are to be held in Medals Plaza here in Whistler (The others will be at the venues...the events are awesome & there are still tickets...if you are in the area go get some!!). It was a gorgeous clear day, Spirit of the West was playing in the Village square and a dear friend of mine was walking the town in her RCMP Red Serge. Good night to hit Whistler Village with the family for an evening out. Of course, I took a bunch of photos....yet to be dealt with....but here is one:

I ~love~ the vintage look of the image & the timelessness of the uniforms!

More photos to come & I am working on some new things here too. Looking forward to sharing them with everyone!

Vancouver 2010 {Vancouver, Whistler, Pemberton photographer}

Whew! What an awesome 17 days we just had here in Whistler. Whistler was the host mountain resort for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games. We had 3 fantastic venues with tonnes of great sport action & I don't think I have ever felt a better vibe than I did in February in the Village.

Highlights?

Hearing about Alexandre Biledeau's gold medal, a first for a Canadian on home soil (or snow!)
Watching the victory ceremonies with my family in the Village
Hanging out at Canada Olympic house a couple of days a week
Watching the Men's Super G from the (free!!) viewing pods on Whistler Mountain
Seeing the sportsmanship of Manny Osborne-Paradis after a fall ending his run for the day, stand up and smile & wave at the crowd
Listen to cowbells & O Canada on a daily basis
Watching the Men's gold medal goal in the Town Plaza
Listening to my 2 year old yell "Go Canada!"
Watching Canada take Gold & Silver in Whistler in Ladies 2 person bobsleigh

Yup, it was an awesome once in a lifetime experience. Here are just a few shots of those memorable days:

Playing with light

I haven't posted much lately as my family and I have been out enjoying the Olympic Games. Tomorrow is the last day of the Games so life should resume to a more normal pace after that and I might even have a chance to post some pics of the last two weeks!

But until then, I had to post this latest photo of my youngest daughter. The best part about family photography is catching the moments in between. In between the "say cheese" or "look over here" shots. I love to just grab the camera, chat with the kids and click away. I think I caught this one as she was in between chants of "I see, I SEE!"

I was shooting in JPEG and couldn't quite adjust the colour properly so I converted the photo to B&W. I used the Pioneer Woman's B&W action (find it here, it's free!)which I haven't used very often, and then I ran it again by mistake! It might be a bit dramatic for a 2 year old, but I love it:

I thought I would edit one of my own photos. It seems like it's been awhile since I have done that. I also seem to have taken fewer photos of my own children in recent months. Now that it looks like things have slowed a bit, I will have to make an effort to do that. It's so much fun to take an image and "try on" a bunch of different ways to process it. Here is one I was going to enter in the I heart Faces texture challenge....but I was 34 minutes too late. Oops... I'll share my photo here anyways.

About me {Pemberton Family photographer}

Why photography? I can still remember the first photograph that I took that was more than just a snapshot. A simple photo taken in Paris so many years ago that I don't want to count them. But that is the moment that I fell in love with photography. I have been taking photos ever since. First on my bulky point and shoot and then years later on my first SLR, a gift from my husband (thank you Matt). Slowly and by trial and error I learned how to use it to capture what I could see in my mind. I was hooked.

My love of photography deepened with the births of my beautiful daughters. I absolutely love to capture small moments with them each day: a giggle, a far away look, a crocodile tear drop... 5 years after the birth of my first daughter I am still frequently drawn to those photographs and am amazed at how fast she has grown from a newborn to a little girl. I am so thankful to have that time documented.

With the gift of my first DSLR (thank you Mum & Dad) I could capture so much more and have full control over the finished product. I have learned how to capture the most simple and precious moments with my children and turn them into beautiful photographs that our family will cherish for years to come. By knowing that I have these moments preserved with beautiful photographs I can simply enjoy the rest of my time my girls.

It would be a pleasure for me to do the same for you. Let me capture your children at their most precious stages so you can enjoy the moments of their childhood for many years to come.

Welcome! I am really excited to launch Jen Prescott photography & with it my blog. For now this will be the best way to find out about some upcoming specials I have in the works & to view sneek peeks of my photo sessions.
